Puritanism essays
Puritanism essays The discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus brought many changes through out the European continent. Many nations seized the opportunity in hopes of improving their economies and expanding their territory through out the Americas. For the English in particular, it led to settlement and eventually colonization of much of the Eastern American coast. From the time of settlement, New England and the Chesapeake, both colonies of English origin had developed rather differently and had formed distinct societies by 1700. The variations in development of these colonies occurred because of the differences in the religious ideals and social structure. The Puritans, one of the first group settlers in New England, strived to create a society that was based on their religion. They tried to lead useful and hard-working lives and attributed all their successes to God. Through the religious ideals, the clergy and the government were intertwined and worked with each other to maintain the piety and the creation of a close-knit Christian society (Doc. A). This society was based so much on religion that it also helped resolve many problems that would occur. Many economical problems of the time were solved by assessing the morality of it according to Christian ideals (Doc. E). The Christian religion was so important that no other religion was allowed to practice in New England. People of different views on religion than the Puritans were asked to conform or leave the area. The Chesapeake settlers, however, were the least concerned with establishing a society that emphasized religious ideals. They were very secular and were primarily conce rned with economical gain. For example, in Maryland the Calverts allowed all Christian people to practice the faith, regardless of denomination. The reason for this was more economical than religious: to attract settlers to occupy land, therefore increasing profits. Many of the problems that rose due to eithe...

Group Setting Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Group Setting - Research Paper Example It discusses the different subjects in the study, their particular type of illness, and how willing they were to make changes in their lifestyles to cope with these particular afflictions. This study takes a look at homeless individuals who presented with co-occurring disorders of mental illness and substance abuse and some of the different ways that they can be assisted, what resources are available, and how to offer them specific types of support for these afflictions. There is an increasing concern of how best to deal with the members of the homeless population who suffer from mental illness, especially in light of the fact that it is often due to the severity of the mental illness that these individuals end up in a situation that results in becoming homeless in the first place. One possible method of addressing this issue of social concern is to take a group of concerned individuals, comprised of volunteers, doctors, therapists, and social workers who would all work together with these individuals to show them what resources are available to them and how they can best avail themselves of those resources. In the introductory phase of the group, the individuals that comprise the group, the doctors, therapists, social workers, and volunteers would all work together to determine the best target population to start with; a look at the different areas where the homeless congregate, as well as the types of people who make up this population would serve as a way to best address this goal. Once the target area has been determined, the group members would, through the use of their individual specialties, work with the members of the homeless population who suffer from mental illness, and based upon their affliction, determine the appropriate resources they would need in order to best meet the goal of improving the quality of life for the patients as well as working to get them back into

People Resourcing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words - 1
People Resourcing - Essay Example Planning and better management of human resources is an issue that cannot be ignored in a countryââ¬â¢s development strategies. Human resource planning is the critical evaluation as well as identification of labor requirements for planed projects to meet the social and economic targets in the society. The most efficient approach to good human resource planning starts with attaining information on a particular human resource function, the selection or recruitment of workers, training, motivations, work place diversity, and compensations when need rise. Human resource planning is indicated by sufficient man power, comprising of all categories of workers and diverse skill and talents. The workers should be available in specific locations and perform their duties when required. This discourse is about the importance of attaining labor market prevailing conditions before human resource planning. There is need to observe the labor market trends to correct the in balance between its dema nd and supply. Labor market can be categorized as either internal or external. Internal labor market refers to a pool of workers within a certain organization. It could also mean a mechanism through which employees are assigned to certain roles within the organization. The number of employees is determined by the human resource policy put in place like job security, investment levels, sophistication levels in the organization departments, and the business approach adopted. Available internal labor market information can assist the human resource planning team in greater ways (Pilbeam, 2010). Prior to annual recruitments, the company may decide to retain the existing workers and offer trainings to meet the current demands. The retained employees can be motivated further by developments, creation of better employment terms, and salary reviews. This would increase their productivity hence increase turn over to the company. This would be cheaper than hiring new employees who may require time to adjust to the companyââ¬â¢s environment and working policies. Classical model of internal labor market is associated with sophisticated and structured pool of workers. Such employees have established experiences and complex technological skills that are ideal to the daily operations of a certain organizationsââ¬â¢ department. Such pool of workers have limited interactions with the out side stake holders due to fears that they could be lured to join other organizations at higher salary hence they are motivated by annual incentives, job promotions, and securities so that they stick to their companies. Having full knowledge of such workers is a great deal to the human resource planning team to assist in their retention within the company. Having full knowledge of existing employees may determine who to be out sourced to external companies and generate more income to the company. A company may cut the annual expenses by reducing the existing labor. It will be wise for the human resource planning team to evaluate the existing employees before the retrenchment operations. It would be a great loss to the company to lose a vital team member due lack of internal labor market information. Internal labor market information is much easier and cheaper to be obtained than the external labor pool. External labor market represents the pool of workers available outside (externally) a certain organizations. The type of workers required by a firm is determined by

Patriarchal Terrorism :: Domestic Violence, Control
Patriarchal Terrorism is general need to control a relationship. It is violence exclusively initiated by men as a way of gaining and maintaining absolute control over their female partner. (Shehan, 2003) The second form of couple violence, is common couple violence, is less a product of patriarchy. (Johnson, 1995) Patriarchal terrorism does exist today. Differences do not exist in intimate violence based on social class, education level, race / ethnicity or sexual orientation. Intimate violence is violence that occurs between two people in a relationship. It includes four types of behaviors: physical abuse, sexual abuse, threats, and emotional abuse. The longer the abuse goes on the longer it will affect the victim. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2006) Partner violence occurs in all countries, social, economic, religious and cultural boundaries. (Shehan, 2003) I have observed couples with good communication and poor communication and intimacy. Dr. Gottman and his coll eagues created recommendations, tactics, and strategies for couples with poor communication, intimacy and conflict problems. There is not a specific time or date when family violence began. But social scientist began studying family violence in the United States in the 1960ââ¬â¢s. (Shehan, 2003) In the United States, the way in which children were punished for breaking the rules was often semi-violent or violent behavior. Violence was there when there was no family system. Violence comes in many forms physical, mental, emotion and sexual. Family violence involves domestic violence. During the womenââ¬â¢s movement public awareness of the domestic abuse problem became known. The first shelter for battered women was open in 1974 and the shelter led to many opening of other shelters and domestic violence programs. By the 1990ââ¬â¢s law enforcement stated to view domestic violence as a serious issue. Police protocol changed and arrest were being made. According to the National Survey violence in one relationship leads to violence in another relationship. (Shehan, 2003) Families provide training ground s for violence. If children see violence in their home they are mostly to portray violence in their everyday lives. Child abuse and maltreatment includes physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, in addition to neglect. Displays of child abuse and neglect include injuries inflicted by a child giver, head injury, and injury to organs. Head trauma is the leading cause of death in children. According to the World Health Organization, there were an estimated 57, 000 deaths attributed to homicide among children under 15 years of age in 2000.

Strategic planning is critical to business success. Different from classic business planning, the strategic variety involves vision, mission and outside-of-the-box thinking.Strategic planning describes where you want your company to go, not necessarily how you're going to get there. However, like all other ââ¬Å"travel plans,â⬠without knowing where you want to go, creating details on how to arrive are meaningless. Strategic planning defines the ââ¬Å"whereâ⬠that your company is heading. In order for a business to be successful, there needs to be a roadmap for success. A strategic plan helps to provide direction and focus for all employees. It points to specific results that are to be achieved and establishes a course of action for achieving them.A strategic plan also helps the various work units within an organization to align themselves with common goals. Building a strategic plan is not difficult. It will take some thought and some feedback from customers and others, but businesses should be routinely garnering feedback from appropriate constituent groups on an on-going basis. The process of developing a strategic plan should be rewarding for all involved and usually helps develop stronger communications between members of the planning team. Once developed, the key to making the plan work is a commitment to seeing it through and sound implementation. Many businesses have developed strategic plans only to put them on a shelf to gather dust. Managers need a well-developed strategic plan in order to effectively establish expectations for their employees. Without a plan, expectations are developed in a void and there is little or no alignment with common goals. A good strategic plan looks out 2 to 5 years and describes clearly how the business will grow and prosper over that planning horizon. 2. 0 Strategic Plan 3. 0 Describe mission statement, strategic goals and corporate strategies for a hotel 4. Mission Statement In 2010, Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts had more than seventy hotels and 40,000 employees, with a vision to double within five years, all while maintaining their unique culture of high quality caring and hospitality. In recent years, the hotel chain has won almost every global award, including Asiaââ¬â¢s best hotel brand for business and vacation, best luxury hotel chain (Asia Money), best business hotel brand in Asia Pacific (Business Traveler) and top five best overseas hotel (Observer and Guardian) (Marquardt 2011).Shangri-La has a powerful vision for its employees as well as its guests. Employee learning and development is an integral role in Shangri-La and is part of the companyââ¬â¢s mission, which states that its aim includes ââ¬Å"enabling all employees to achieve their personal and professional growth. â⠬ Eng Leong Tan, Director for HR notes, ââ¬Å"We seek to be the first choice employer among hospitality workers. We are committed to providing an environment in which employees can learn and grow.It is not enough just to pay well and offer good benefits. Growth opportunities are equally important, especially to younger employeesâ⬠(Marquardt 2011). Shangri-Laââ¬â¢s hotel mission statement we envision a community of responsible and educated citizens who are environmentally conscious, practice social responsibility in their daily lives and inspire others to do the same. We commit to operating in an economically, socially and environmentally responsible manner whilst balancing the interest of diverse stakeholders (Lincoln 2007).We strive to be a leader in corporate citizenship and sustainable development, caring for our employees and customers, seeking to enrich the quality of life for the communities in which we do business and serving as good stewards of society and the en vironment (Shangri-La Asia Limited 2010). ââ¬Å"To delight our guests every time by creating engaging experiences straight from our heartsâ⬠. Again the same, they want to delight their quests, but as there is a low traffic of guests, it is self explanatory that they are not fulfilling the needs of their guests.According to their mission they want to differentiate them with others by providing the guests a feeling of home and interacting but for that they need customers, without that they canââ¬â¢t do anything (Kumar Swain 2011). 4. 2 Strategic Goals Shangri-La Hotel is a facility of services which provide places to stay for customers around the world. It is known as a hotel or a resort for consumers to relax orà even have aà vacation atà the hotel. Shangri-La Hotel is aà much known hotel in Singaporeà because it was founded there itself. Shangri-La Hotel has provided a hotel for business traveler. Therefore, it has made another target of business in its management. With these targets, the company has proven to be the worldââ¬â¢s best finest hotel in management and services. This hotel has also been situated in Malaysia itself, which have also become a finest hotel for business travelers and also travelers around the world and locally. Therefore, with these achievements, we have decided to make a research about the company itself and prove of its facility that satisfies us as a customer (Shangri-La International Hotel Management Ltd. 2012).Great hotels are made by great employees, not by crystal chandeliers or expensive carpets. This strongly held belief at Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts translates to a firm commitment to employee development. Such dedication will be increasingly important as the groupââ¬â¢s workforce grows from 37,000 to nearly 60,000 by 2013 (Shangri-La International Hotel Management Ltd. 2012). The process begins with careful selection staff are ââ¬Å"hired for attitude, trained for skillsâ⬠providing a fertile f oundation for the Shangri-La philosophies to be embraced.Shangri-La then invests heavily in training perhaps more than any other hotel group with intensive, ongoing coaching for all staff at 68 hotels and resorts. The group then retains its high caliber staff by creating an environment whereby employees may achieve their personal and career goals. Shangri-La has one of the lowest staff turnover rate in the industry (Shangri-La International Hotel Management Ltd. 2012). 4. 3 Corporate Strategies Shangri-La Care the groupââ¬â¢s defining feature is its exceptional and warm hospitality, as defined by its philosophy Shangri-La hospitality from caring people. All staff undergoes the ââ¬Å"Shangri-La Careâ⬠training programme within six months of joining the group. The programme is designed to develop a consistent Shangri-La style of service to deliver a superior guest experience and build brand loyalty. Respect, courtesy, sincerity, helpfulness and humility are all core values of the training. Under the umbrella theme ââ¬Å"Shangri-La Care the Shangri-La Wayâ⬠the programme is divided into four modules: Shangri-La Care 1 ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Shangri-La hospitality from caring peopleâ⬠, Shangri-La Care 2 ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Delighting customersâ⬠, Shangri-La Care 3 ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Recover to gain loyaltyâ⬠and Shangri-La Care 4 ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Taking ownership. The name of ââ¬ËShangri Laââ¬â¢ was actually from a novel published in 1933 named, ââ¬ËLost Horizonââ¬â¢ written by James Hilton. In present days, the name ââ¬ËShangri Laââ¬â¢ has become famous in the worldwide. In 1971, Shangri La has its own deluxe hotel in Singapore. After that, Shang ri La had grew into a huge cooperation which own 72 hotels and resorts in different countries, such as, Asia Pacific, North America, the Middle East, Europe and yet Shangri La is planning to develop more hotels in different countries.Besides that, Shangri La has two Asiaââ¬â¢s most prestigious recreational clubs, that is, the Aberdeen Marina Club in Hong Kong, and the Xili Golf and Country Club in Shenzhen. Furthermore, Shangri Laââ¬â¢s always follow Asian Hospitality as their unique hospitality to treat their customer. In order to compete with other hotels and resorts, Shangri La had emphasized on hospitality towards their customer. The main thing that makes Shangri La being successful and being different from the other hotels and resorts is offering high level of Asian standards of hospitality and caring for people. Therefore, Shangri La hotels and resorts will care for each and every customer. They will make sure that every customer will satisfied with their services. Shangr i La search for trendsetters and professionals to serve their customer and to achieve the goal, that is, to make sure every customer has great experience once they stay in the hotels and resorts. The four modules of Shangri-La Care focus on the groupââ¬â¢s mission: Delighting customers each and every time, part of Shangri-Laââ¬â¢s guiding principles (Mohdà Rizal 2007).
